Welcome to the Writer's Workshop. Each month we publish articles dealing with matters of concern to writers, with an emphasis on the technical problems specific to science fiction writing. No matter what sort of a writer you are or wish to be, you will find something of interest here.

THE ART OF WRITING

THIS MONTH'S ARTICLE

Incidental Characters

No story is complete without incidental characters.  Remember the unknown crewman on Star Trek who always showed up in the transporter room just as Kirk, Spock, and McCoy were about to beam down to the surface?  Guess which character isn't coming back!

 Robots

One of the hallmarks of science fiction writing has been the robot.  The first robots were scientific creations that turned on their creators, not unlike Mary Shelly's monster turned on its hapless inventor.  This was not a coincidence, since virtually all early robot stories were mere rewrites of Mary Shelly's Frankenstein.

However, robots matured after awhile, as did we, their creators.  Eventually the robot story graduated to Asimov's Robbie the Robot;  the interplanetary cop in the foam rubber suit, Gort (Gort!  Klaatu Barada Nicto.); Ann Francis's Robbie the Robot, the Second; and finally to the modern robots:  the Terminator, R2D2, and C3PO.  Come with us this month as we follow the evolution of our little mechanical monsters, servants, guardians, and finally, friends.
